This cheesery’s heritage is squarely based on one man's vision and many peoples execution, Rob Visser spent many years scouring the french countryside to find unique recipes and learn trade secrets at the feet of masters.
Amongst their many variations the core stock remains Brie, Camembert and Blue. These have spun off into unique and trademarked cheeses such as the Huguenot (Semi-hard, brushed rind style moulded into huge golden cartwheels), Boland (a semi-hard cheese with a hard rind made in the style of a Port Salut) and Lanquedoc (a semi soft washed rind cheese).
Located on the breathtaking Franschhoek-Simondium Road, the farm is awash with gorgeous, fawn-coloured, long-lashed Jersey cows who provide the key ingredient, milk from grass-fed cows!
It’s a stunning drive with a picturesque destination, the tasty cheeses are just the icing on the cake of a beautiful morning out!
Anura is situated between Paarl and Stellenbosch in the foothills of the Simonsberg mountain range and has traditionally been planted with red wine such as Mourvédre, Petit Verdot, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Malbec.
It is, however, also the home to Forest Hill Cheesery which produces a range of artisan white mould, soft and mature style cheeses. The cheesery began its’ journey in the 2000, focussing on wonderful rich flavoured, creamy white mould cheeses, such as Camembert and Brie. This expanded into production of these and Bella, Marisch and Manchego cheeses. The flagship cheese is Anura Mountain Cheese, is a Gruyere style cheese matured for five to seven months to develop complex, rich flavours.
All cheeses are made in small batches and entirely by hand, meaning that you will be having a boutique cheese experience at the beautiful Anura tasting rooms.
Located on the beautiful granite slopes of Paarl Mountain and facing Table Mountain in the distance this estate has been producing wine since 1699.
Three things define this beautiful farm, wine, cheese and goats (which have their own tower and have attained celebrity status by now). To accompany this you have a tasting shed with a vast selection of cheese, homemade goats milk products and wine.
Freshly, home-baked breads and bagels are made to compliment the twenty-five cheeses on offer.
These include, White Rock with pear and caramel (A mild, semi-soft white cheese with added glazed pear and natural caramel flavour creating a lovely combination of sweet fruits and a cheesy flavour) and Vintner’s Brie (a traditional full flavoured, soft white mould cheese with a creamy ‘mushroom’ flavour).
