Loop down Loop Street - The Village Idiot - Part 2

August 17, 2017

A Capetonian neighborhood bar that stays close to SA roots with a consistent homage to braai culture. The best thing to do is grab yourself a braai board which is a selection of braaied meats served with chakalaka (best accompanied by a freshly baked roosterkoek).

This is truly an opportunity to dive in and taste SA culinary culture at its most honest and hearty, with filling meals and exotic flavor combinations. Classics tastes such as Mrs Ball’s boerewors burger with caramelized onion marmalade and proper Durban-Style Bunny Chows will leave your palate excited and intrigued.

The venue is casual and a little vintage, with emphasis definitely being on the “laid back” aspect of the inner-city bar. Along with big screen TV’s for the rugger and ongoing drinks specials, this place is great to kick back and enjoy some time with your friends in.

Wanted: Vintage pub with modern grub - Perseverance Tavern - Part 3

June 01, 2017

Living up to its name, Perseverance Tavern (known as “Persies” by the locals), has been around forever. Since 1808, travelers disembarking from ships at Cape Town’s Castle stayed at the Perseverance Tavern in Slave’s Walk (now Buitenkant Street).

Amongst the many luminaries that have called this watering hole “home” in the last two centuries, is the most notable and enigmatic Cecil John Rhodes. At its heart Persies has been a destination for a warm pub lunch and a cold beer next to a fireplace during the colder months.

It seems the oldest pub in the country has soaked up all the merriment and companionship experienced there and that gives it a sense of immense warmth. In terms of food, we recommend the two heartiest items on the menu springbok pie (beautiful springbok goulash braised in Guinness) and the oh-so-traditional Eisbein (with the prerequisite sauerkraut, mashed potato and mustard sauce). The pub is bedecked in memorabilia of times gone by, and has a lot of great beer on tap, enjoy!
