Esona is Xhosa for 'The very One’, and this lovely boutique estate situated in the beautiful Breede River Valley is certainly one of a kind. With an attitude summed up succinctly by their cheekily named blanc de noir “ Frankly my Dear” they have an alternative approach to wine tasting that goes beyond just tickling your tastebuds. Abandoning the run of the mill cheesy cracker nibble parings that have become standard, Esona pulls out all the stops for pairings that excite all your senses. Each wine is individually paired with chocolate, music and glass type for a sensory immersion that demands savouring and reflection. Though in fitting with this iconoclastic attitude, there is no snobbery here, your wine is just as likely to be paired with Simon and Garfunkel as Stravinsky.
Though their pièce de résistance is their underground tasting by candlelight. Taking place in Esona's Old Cellar in its underground fermentation tanks called Kuips, it will transport you back to a more magical time of myth and mystery. Upstairs there is a divine deli with uninterrupted views across the valley and the mountains beyond.
